Why Has The Songbird of Prophecy Stopped Singing?

For a long while, Seventh-day Adventists were known to be a “people of the book,” but in recent years, hailing from the 1957 marriage with the Evangelical Community, the Adventist songbird has been slowly losing its voice, and today has altogether stopped singing.  Whether you are a proselyte to the faith or a multi-generational Adventist, one thing was very clear: the Bible was respected, and they made an effort to be faithful to its precepts.  What a difference a generation makes!  Today, Adventists are in politics, running profitable abortion mills where babies are robbed from their mother’s womb for gain, involved with sexual abuses (incest is reportedly highest amongst Adventists), providing support to homosexuality, or at least the homosexual agenda, openly supporting Roman Catholic doctrines and –socio-political agendas, looking with admiration at Romanism, endorsed Spiritual Formation (Spiritualism) with NLP techniques, solemnizing Sunday as a day of worship, teaching evolution in their schools, abandoned health reform, dress, reform, social reform, sacred music reform, among a trail of other compromises, and has  now brought us to the place where we are now debating whether or not the Bible endorses female pastors.

This state of affairs came courtesy of doctrinal apostasy, which has been the curse of ancient Israel as well.  Under Samuel Israel looked around at all the ungodly nations and desired a king that they might be like them, and no sooner than Israel appointed its kings did they start acting the part of these unholy nations.  Today, Adventists have looked not at the nations, but at the denomi-nations, yearning at their free demonic worship styles music and doctrines, and have imported them into the “faithful city,” and in its place have reaped “an harlot.”  And as verily as the Spirit of Prophecy through Isaiah, some 2,750 years ago lamented over Israel’s unfaithfulness, in like manner that lamentation echoes in our ears today: “How is the faithful city become an harlot! It was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.” Isa. 1: 21

Downplaying The Prophetic Role of The Papacy In The End Times

The first march of compromise was to wend our way back home in the arms of “mother,” the Catholic church and began to denounce our once deeply held doctrines.  Here’s former world president, Neal C. Wilson, consigning to the historical trash heaps some of the Adventists most treasured doctrines:

“Although it is true that there was a period in the life of the Seventh-day Adventist Church when the denomination took a distinctly anti-Roman Catholic viewpoint…that attitude on the church’s part was nothing more than a manifestation of widespread anti-popery among conservative Protestant denominations in the early part of this century and the latter part of the last, and which has now been consigned to the historical trash heap so far as the Seventh-day Adventist Church is concerned.”[1]

In 1941 the Catholics made a public complaint against Adventist theology, showing them up on the pages of prophecy, and in a few short years, the Vatican won the hearts of our denominational leaders!

“A pamphlet has come to me entitled ‘The Mark of the Beast.’ It identifies the Pope with this ‘mark’ referred to in Revelations XIII. 17, 18.

“It is too bad that the Seventh Day Adventists, who are so sensitive to criticism themselves, should circulate a pamphlet so antagonistic to the Catholic Church.

“The question you ask has been answered many times, although not in recent years in this paper. If we have recourse to the best Biblical scholars or exegetes, we find them applying the test from Revelations to Nero, the arch-persecutor of Christianity in the first century. To give color to their accusation, enemies of the Church publicize something that is not at all true, namely that the Pope’s tiara is inscribed with the words ‘VICARIUS FILII DEI,’ and that if letters in that title were translated into Roman numerals, the sum would equal 666.“

“As a matter of fact, the tiara of the Pope bears no inscription whatsoever.  It is very strange that people can regard themselves as religious and still engage in an apostolate of vituperation and slander.”[2]

Responding to this scathing criticism, the Adventists went back to their doctrinal “drawing boards,” so to speak, and countered with this eye-popping position:

“Thursday June 6:  THE MARK AND NUMBER OF THE BEAST (Rev 13:16-18; 14:1).

What is John’s purpose in mentioning the mark and number of the beast? Rev. 13:16-18.  Why do we say that those who keep Sunday do not have the mark of the beast now? Why is it important that we make this point clear? …

“Over the years, numerous Bible students have come up with various explanations for the 666. Some found significance in the fact that if you added up the number of letters in the name of a former president of the United States, Ronald Wilson Reagan, it came to 666; others saw meaning in that, years ago, all the buses in Jerusalem had 666 on their license plates. This is futile speculation that adds nothing toward understanding truth. The important point is that God’s Word has given us enough information to know what the key issues are and who the players will be in the last days, even if we do not know all the details for now, such as the precise meaning of 666.”

“Friday   June 7:  Please note the following points in conclusion to this week’s study:

“Vicarius Filii Dei (Vicar of the Son of God). Since the Reformation, this papal title has been used to calculate the number 666. But there are several questions that should make us cautious. First, it is not clear that this title is an official one. Second. There is no clear indication in Revelation 13 that the number is based on the numeri­cal value of the letters of a name. The phrase “it is the number of a man” (vs. 18, NIV) could be translated “it is the number of [humanity]”; that is, of humans separated from God. Third, those who insist in counting the numerical value of letters confront the problem of – deciding which language will be used. Because the text does not identify any language, the selection of a particular one will be somewhat arbitrary. At the present time, the symbolism of intensi­fied rebellion, six used three times, and total independence from God seem to be the best option. Time will reveal the full meaning of the symbol.”[3]

So, with such a doctrine, and having as the only Chaplain in the US Senate, a Seventh-day Adventist pastor (Barry Black), the Adventists are not notifying their congregations of the Pope’s September visit to address the joint house of Congress!  Why?  Because they, from a General Conference point of view, no longer see the papacy as a threat to religious liberty; that view, they hold, belongs to the “historical trash heaps!”  so the church is rightly confused, each one doing that which is right in his own eyes, because there is no recognized prophet in Israel, save for Sister White, who died a century ago, and did not have all the light to cover some of the more complex political and religious challenges confronting the church today in a changing world.  Now, look at the sweeping admiration heaped upon the pope as he travels the world!  We long to be like the other denomi-nations, to the extent that we now see the pope’s presence and call it God’s presence!

My 6-year-old granddaughter was delighted about the pope’s recent five-day trip to the Philippines. The reason: All schools closed in the metro Manila area.

Popemania swept the Philippines for weeks, especially during the visit from Jan. 15 to 19. About 6 million people lined the pope’s motorcade route and attended the final mass held in Manila’s Rizal Park.

“The country has many painful reasons to look for hope,” according to a report by The Associated Press.

Popemania spread much farther than Rizal Park. It filled the Internet, television, and radio… A 66-year-old former college teacher named Antolin Adlawan walked 601 miles (968 kilometers) in 36 days to receive a blessing from the pope in Tacloban City. He carried a wooden pole on his back with a poster welcoming the pope. After seeing the pontiff, he told reporters that he could now die in peace…

“To me, the overwhelming response of Filipino Catholics—and some non-Catholics—to the pope’s visit delivers a clear message: People want God to draw near and to be blessed with His presence.

News reports indicate that the pope was aware of that desire and was able to meet many of those expectations. Let me cite some evidence:

Pope Francis dedicated his five-day visit to the impoverished and disenfranchised.

He denounced government corruption, which has contributed to poverty.

He visited homeless children who survive by begging on Manila’s streets.

He declined to use the expensive, bulletproof car with closed, tinted windows that were provided by the government. Instead, he rode in a rather cramped Volkswagen so he could be close to the people and wave at them.

He scrapped his prepared remarks at the Catholic University of Manila to instead speak off the cuff to 12-year-old Glyzelle Palomar, who asked why children suffer abandonment and end up on the streets using drugs and selling their bodies.

He flew from Manila to Tacloban City to meet survivors of Typhoon Yolanda, also known as Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the city and surrounding area in 2013. He wore the same flimsy poncho that typhoon survivors were given in the aftermath of the storm.

The pope’s message to the people of the Philippines could be summed up: God is near, and He cares for all people.

Now I am not comparing the visit of Pope Francis with that of General Conference president Ted N.C. Wilson, who led an evangelistic series in the Philippines that resulted in more than 3,000 baptisms last May. Neither I am saying that the papal visit was a waste of time or that it was a sign of the end of time.

Rather my aim is to testify that God is close to His people… God is very, very close. He is so close that each of us should want to spend more devotional time with Him, both personally and as a group.[4]

Am I reading this correctly?  When the pope comes in town the takeaway message is that “God is close to His people…God is very, very close”?  Do you get the subliminal message being conveyed?  The pope is God, or at the minimum God’s viceroy, and so his physical presence makes God “very, very close” to His people.  And none dare call it apostasy. Ichabod!

Inserting Roman Catholic Relics and Doctrines in Adventist Liturgy And Bible Study

In our Sabbath School lessons, more and more adoration is given to Roman Catholic relics, priestly charity, liturgy and vestments of their worship.  For example, the acceptance of “rosary” in a Bible discussion, while appearing in a distancing view, is really a move in alliance, to conform to the Roman Catholics reading the lesson, that the Adventist Leaders are “coming home,” and bringing all the “children” (church members) with them!

“Although the biblical intention of these images was purely symbolical… It is seen through the use of…  the Christian crosses around the neck, and the Muslim (and Christian) rosaries around the fingers.”[5]

The Rosary is not a Protestant practice or symbol but is a distinctively Roman Catholic tradition, yet it finds its place in Bible discussions in Adventism.  This might cause heartburn to some readers, but the Cross is not a Christian symbol either, it is purely pagan!  The Christian’s symbol is a Lamb.  Though we should glory in the efficacious blood that was shed on the cross, wearing the symbol of the cross is idolatry, and is tantamount to ancient Isreal’s vaingloriously worshiping their temple rather than the God whose presence made it glorious.

“One of the most familiar symbols of Roman Catholicism is the circle of small beads called rosary beads.”[6]

“The Rosary (Latin: rosarium, meaning “crown of roses” or “garland of roses”[1]), in its most commonly known format as the Dominican rosary,[2][3] is a form of prayer used especially in the Catholic Church or a string of prayer beads used to count the component prayers.”[7]

“According to Catholic tradition, the rosary was instituted by the Blessed Virgin Mary herself. In the 13th century, she is said to have appeared to St. Dominic (founder of the Dominicans), given him a rosary, and asked that Christians pray the Hail Mary, Our Father and Glory Be prayers instead of the Psalms.”[8]

“The church that holds to the word of God is irreconcilably separated from Rome. Protestants were once thus apart from this great church of apostasy, but they have approached more nearly to her, and are still in the path of reconciliation to the Church of Rome. Rome never changes. Her principles have not altered in the least. She has not lessened the breach between herself and Protestants; they have done all the advancing. But what does this argue for the Protestantism of this day? It is the rejection of Bible truth which makes men approach to infidelity. It is a backsliding church that lessens the distance between itself and the Papacy.”[9]

The Myth About Unclean Meats Including Abstinence From Pork Eating

Adventist iconic Television Evangelist Doug Bachelor finds himself torn between a love for the truth and a love for his church, yet cannot overcome his emotions of uneasiness as he watches the corporate body reaching across the proverbial gulf, in an effort to join hands with Romanism and Spiritualism.  Read his  heartbeat below:

“Is it just me or does it seem strange… maybe even prophetic… that at the same exact time the principal leaders of the Catholic Church are assembling to consider redefining how their church views the differences between men and women, the principal leaders in the Adventist church are also meeting at our Maryland headquarters in which the hot topics are homosexuality and the distinction of gender roles in the church. …

“I’d like to encourage everybody to fast and pray as our leaders take up these very important subjects in the next couple of days that the Holy Spirit will guide and we will stick to the Scriptures. The future of the church really is in the balance right now!”[10]

Enter the subject of pork abstinence in Adventism.  Most of my readers, I would assume, hold that Adventists do not eat pork and other unclean foods, based on the same command which mandated that our first parents should not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  In other words, a direct commandment from YHWH.  Even here, we are about to lose four faces, and footing on the Scriptures, in preference for a more politically correct posture, “health benefits.”  If you see what the White Estate is now projecting, you will not be confident that you took a baptismal vow based on the findings of modern Science instead of the Bible!  Let’s take a read:

“After the health reform vision, of course, Mrs. White did come out against the use of pork, arguing that it produced “scrofula, leprosy and cancerous tumors.” It is significant that she and other Adventists who wrote against the use of pork up until 1866, argued strictly from a health standpoint. In other words, just because some Biblical arguments were used to reinforce the ban on pork, we cannot conclude that at that point Adventists were well on their way to a full-blown teaching on the distinction between clean and unclean meats.”[11]

“D.M. Canright, in 1866, does allude to Deuteronomy 14:8, “And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass.” But Canright makes no mention of other unclean meats, and makes no use of the further material in Deuteronomy 14 on the subject.5 When he does mention oysters in an article in the following year, he mentions their alleged powers to excite “certain kinds of feelings,” and introduces no Biblical argument.

“In 1870, W. C. Gage undertakes to refute a rival Advent periodical which took exception to the “scriptural assertion that the swine is unclean.” But Gage does not cite either Deuteronomy 14 or Leviticus 11. In fact, Gage remarks, “If the Scriptures fail to settle the question, let reason have her sway. Examine the animal, and see its filthy habits.”7 He does discuss some of the Bible’s testimony on pork, but his article is far from being a contribution to a broad understanding of the Bible’s teaching on clean and unclean meats, being, as it is, heavy with naturalistic arguments and exclusively interested in the pork question.”

James White, in an 1872 article on “Swine’s Flesh,” does show the beginnings of a wider application of Levitical law. He does mention Deuteronomy 14:8 again, and he does seek to refute the argument that the prohibition on swine was a merely Jewish one and therefore not binding on Christians. He reminds his readers that the distinction between clean and unclean was recognized in the Bible long before the “existence of a single Jew.” Still, the whole thrust of his argument is to discredit the pig, not to establish general categories of clean and unclean meats. He does not discuss the Biblical criteria for the distinction at all.

“The general distinction between clean and unclean meats in Adventist circles remained undeveloped throughout the nineteenth century. While Adventists argued vigorously against pork, the weight of their argument continued to be carried by physiological criteria. Uriah Smith explicitly rejected the applicability of the Mosaic distinction: “We believe there is better ground on which to rest [the prohibition on pork] than the ceremonial law of the former dispensation, for if we take the position that that law is still binding, we must accept it all, and then we shall have more on our hands than we can easily dispose of.” [12]

So from an official Denominational stance, you’d stand unsupported by the General Conference if you taught and believed that your baptismal vow to abstain from unclean meats was based on biblical authority, instead of the AMA (American Medical Association).  But before you give up hope, here is what the world knows about us, even if we are too timid in the face of the Evangelical crowd to confess it anymore:

“Seventh-day Adventists do not eat pork or other unclean meat as identified in the book of Leviticus and many avoid all meat for health reasons.”[13]

For Adventists in the nineteenth century then, all meat-eating was discouraged, while the eating of pork was virtually banned. Other meats which we would consider unclean were not seen, apparently, in the same light as pork.”[14]

Sunday Sacredness Is Coming To A SDA Church Near You: C.D. Brooks weighs in on Adventist Sunday services

“This development at First SDA Church is reminiscent of a once Sabbath-keeping church, under the leadership of Alex Bryan, the current Walla Walla SDA University Church Pastor, which is now a fully non-denominational Sunday-observing church. It is a documented fact that Alex Bryan “created a ‘Sunday service’ church and left Seventh-day Adventist employment. Alex Bryan began his ministry at the New Community Fellowship in Atlanta in 1996 under the blessing of conference administration. However, the methods used to reach secular young adults resulted in the creation of a ‘Sunday service’ and, as the conference administration was considering his termination, Alex Bryan resigned his denominational employment in 2002 and remained independent for the next five years. The resulting Sunday observing church still meets…The church meets Sunday from 10:30 AM to 12:05 PM. The current pastor is Alex’s brother, David Bryan.” Perhaps Pastor Snell is counseling with Pastor Bryan and employing his methods of “evangelism” or maybe he is reading Bryan’s books, all of which are interwoven with mysticism/spiritualism. It is appalling that Bryan is allowed to be employed by the Seventh-day Adventist church given his history and current involvement with and practices in ecumenism and emergent church theology and activities. This is a clear example of what could be the future for First SDA Church.”[15]

Adventist Chaplaincy and The Papal Visit in September 2015

I am personally proud of pastor Barry Black, Rear Admiral of the US Navy and the first Black Chaplain to serve the US Senate, and also frequents the US Congress.  After all, I have visited his home and from time to time attend church with his wife, where she currently serves as an elder of that congregation.  For those of you who are not aware of this man of distinction, here is a snippet of his bios: “Rear Admiral Barry C. Black, USN (Ret.) (born November 1, 1948) is the 62nd Chaplain of the United States Senate. He was elected to this position on June 27, 2003, becoming the first African American and the first Seventh-day Adventist to hold this office.”[16]

“In addition to opening the Senate each day in prayer, Chaplain Black’s duties include counseling and spiritual care for the Senators, their families and their staffs, a combined constituency of six thousand people. Chaplain Black’s days are filled with meeting Senators about spiritual and moral issues, assisting Senators’ staffs with research on theological and biblical questions, teaching Senate Bible study groups, encouraging such groups as the weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast, and facilitating discussion and reflection small groups among Senators and staff.”[17]

So with such a caliber man in that highly coveted office, you can imagine he knows much more than the average pastor in the pulpit, for he is not only rightly placed, but highly placed, and well respected on the Hill.  It is deafening then to see the absolute silence within the world church of Seventh-day Adventist in light of the pope’s September visit, only five months away.  This is to say that even if the public press (media mills) did not notify us, that Adventists would be and should have been the first to know of this official visit by the Pope to address the US Congress.  But alas! The songbird of prophecy has stopped singing, and so whether or not he notified our officials at the General Conference, the silence from our churches speaks volumes as to how close we are to “Mother’s” embrace.  Yes, we are close, very, very close.  Praise God for the Internet!

 Pope Francis to address U.S. Congress in September

The Washington Times – Thursday, February 5, 2015

“Pope Francis will address a joint session of Congress during his September visit to the U.S., House Speaker John A. Boehner said Thursday. Mr. Boehner said the speech, slated for Sept. 24, is the first time a pope will have spoken to Congress.

“Mr. Boehner issued the invitation to the pope last March, when it became known Francis was considering a visit to the U.S. later this year for a major church meeting.

“In a time of global upheaval, the Holy Father’s message of compassion and human dignity has moved people of all faiths and backgrounds,” Mr. Boehner said Thursday in announcing the pope has accepted the invitation. “His teachings, prayers, and very example bring us back to the blessings of simple things and our obligations to one another.” http://www.washin

So, from this cross-section of compromises, we can clearly see why the Adventist songbird of prophecy has stopped singing.  Over and again, we can hear the voice of love thundering in our ears: “How has the faithful city become an harlot?” Please accept this sobering poem written so many decades ago, as God’s final plea to a backslidden church.

The Church Walking with the World

The Church and the World walked far apart

On the changing shores of time,

The World was singing a giddy song,

And the Church a hymn sublime.

 

“Come, give me your hand,” said the merry World,

“And walk with me this way!”

But the faithful Church hid her gentle hands

And solemnly answered “Nay!

 

I will not give you my hand at all,

And I will not walk with you;

Your way is the way that leads to death;

Your words are all untrue.”

 

“Nay, walk with me but a little space,” 

Said the World with a kindly air;

“The road I walk is a pleasant road,

And the sun shines always there.

 

Your path is thorny and rough and rude,

But mine is broad and plain;

My way is paved with flowers and dews,

And yours with tears and pain.

 

The sky to me is always blue,

No want, no toil I know;

The sky above you is always dark,

Your lot is a lot of woe.

There’s room enough for you and me

To travel side by side.”

 

Half  shyly the Church approached the World

And gave him her hand of snow;

And the old World grasped it and walked along,

Saying, in accents low:

 

“Your dress is too simple to please my taste;

I will give you pearls to wear,

Rich velvets and silks for your graceful form,

And diamonds to deck your hair.”

 

The Church looked down at her plain white robes,

And then at the dazzling World,

And blushed as she saw his handsome lip

With a smile contemptuous curled.

 

“I will change my dress for a costlier one,”

Said the Church, with a smile of grace;

Then her pure white garments drifted away,

And the World gave, in their place,

Beautiful satins and shining silks,

Roses and gems and costly pearls;

While over her forehead her bright hair fell

Crisped in a thousand curls.

 

“Your house is too plain,” said the proud old World,

“I’ll build you one like mine;

With walls of marble and towers of gold,

And furniture ever so fine.”

 

So he built her a costly and beautiful house;

Most splendid it was to behold;

Her sons and her beautiful daughters dwelt there

Gleaming in purple and gold.

 

Rich fairs and shows in the halls were held,

And the World and his children were there.

Laughter and music and feasts were heard

In the place that was meant for prayer.

 

There-were cushioned seats for the rich and the gay,

To sit in their pomp and pride;

But the poor who were clad in shabby array,

Sat meekly down outside.

 

“You give too much to the poor,” said the World.

 “Far more than you ought to do;

If they are in need of shelter and food,

Why need it trouble you?

 

Go, take your money and buy rich robes,

Buy horses and carriages fine;

Buy pearls and jewels and dainty food,

Buy the rarest and costliest wine.

 

My children, they dote on all these things,

And if you their love would win

You must do as they do, and walk in the ways

That they are walking in.”

 

So the poor were turned from her door in scorn,

And she heard not the orphan’s cry;

But she drew her beautiful robes aside,

As the widows went weeping by.

 

Then the sons of the World and the Sons of the Church

Walked closely hand and heart,

And only the Master, who knoweth all,

Could tell the two apart.

 

Then the Church sat down at her ease, and said,

“I am rich and my goods increase;

I have need of nothing, or aught to do,

But to laugh, and dance, and feast.”

 

The sly World heard, and he laughed in his sleeve,

And mockingly said, aside:

“The Church is fallen, the beautiful Church;

And her shame is her boast and her pride.”

 

The angel drew near to the mercy seat,

And whispered in sighs her name;

Then the loud anthems of rapture were hushed,

And heads were covered with shame.

 

And a voice was heard at last by the Church

From Him who sat on the throne:

 

“I know thy works, and how thou hast said,

‘I am rich, and hast not known

That thou art naked, poor and blind,

And wretched before my face;’

And blot thy name from its place.”

Special Update, May 31, 2019:

In 1997 a leading General Conference Official, then current editor of the Adventist Review, wrote an article on the merger of Adventists and Roman Catholics, declaring, “Let’s put aside all Catholic-bashing from the pulpit or classroom.”  Johnsson, William G., 1997. Adventists and Roman Catholics, Adventist Review, June 26:5.

After having read The Review’s position on “Adventists and Roman Catholics” togetherness, one Catholic who is married to an Adventist wrote this:

“I am a Roman Catholic married to an Adventist. I read the Review regularly to see what’s in the heart and mind of the Adventist Church. I do this looking and hoping for signs of reconciliation—that the gulf dividing us will be overcome… I understood that Jesus Christ had broken down the walls that separated Catholics and Adventists. Just as Jews and Greeks could be Christians together, so could Catholics and Adventists be at peace and love each other.  When someone loves me, I can listen to him and take on board what he says. But if I’m talked at about dogmas and doctrines, my heart is inclined to close. Let’s bear with one another. We are neighbors in this world, and maybe in the end the “gulf” between us can be bridged.”  ADVENTIST REVIEW , AUGUST 28, 1997,  p. 3.

Even to a practicing Roman Catholic, Johnsson’s essay inspired hope in the long-awaited marriage of nominal Seventh-day Adventists with orthodox Roman Catholics!
