Will The Seventh-day Adventist Church Ever Apologize to the Pope?

September 23, 2015: This is intended to jolt you, and it is not hype!  Did you ever, in your wildest imagination believe the day would come in the Seventh-day Adventist church, when the leadership will be lobbied by the membership to apologize to the Papacy?  Well, that sad day has arrived! I want to share with you this news clip from Adventist Today, and warn you ahead of time that it is only a draft proposal request of Ted Wilson to place on Church letterhead.  I am not suggesting that Wilson will sign this or a revised draft of the petitioned letter, but it is eye-opening to even muster the courage to petition the church on a matter so central to the Third Angel’s message.  I am producing the proposed letter and ideas behind its creation so as to preserve its memories, in the event it has been removed.

A Proposed Letter of Apology to Pope Francis from the GC President

“by Ervin Taylor, September 13, 2015:    Readers of the Adventist Today web site and anyone living in Philadelphia who listens to or reads local media in or around that city may be aware of the recent mass mailing of a book, The Great Controversy, to 700,000 individuals living in that city or surrounding area. The mailing was intended to be coincident with a visit to Philadelphia, the “City of Brotherly Love,” by the current Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis.

“As readers of Adventist Today will know, The Great Controversy is a 19th-century work based on an extensive editing of materials originally produced by and under the name of a co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination, Ellen Gould Harmon-White (1837-1915). Like a wide cross section of many other evangelical and later fundamentalist Protestant authors belonging to a wide range of conservative Protestant churches in 19th- and early 20th-century America, White was very critical of the theology and history of the Roman Catholic Church in Europe. Obviously, the heritage she reflected went back centuries, based on the long-standing, intense hostility that existed between Protestants and Catholics beginning at the time of the Reformation and continuing down into the late 19th century in many countries in Europe before being transplanted across the Atlantic to the United States.

“A regrettable part of that heritage was the continued affirmation of conspiracy scenarios concerning alleged attempts of Roman Catholics to establish some sort of political advantage, usually by some nefarious means in America. Anti-Catholic hostility was exacerbated during the 19th century because of the competition for employment with native-born Anglo-Saxon Americans due to the large influx of immigrants from Catholic countries in Europe, especially Ireland. It even had a 19th-century political expression in America with the formation of the anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant, anti-Jewish “Know-Nothing” political movement.

“We can be encouraged that the organization which was responsible for the mailing of the Great Controversy volume was not the official Seventh-day Adventist Church. The organization was Remnant Publications, based in Michigan. However, the message that this mailing was clearly intended to communicate is an anti-Catholic message and the source of that message emanates from a part of the Adventist tradition. In light of this action on the part of members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, it is here proposed that the President of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church send the following letter or some version of it to the Pope asking for his understanding and forgiveness.

“Here is a draft of the text of such a letter that would be written on the stationery of the General Conference of SDAs:

“His Holiness, Pope Francis
Apostolic Palace
00120 Vatican City

“Your Holiness:

“It is recently come to my attention that certain misguided members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the United States have distributed a book, written by the co-founder of this Christian denomination, to many individuals living in the city of Philadelphia, prior to your upcoming visit to that city.

“That book is entitled The Great Controversy. That volume was written in the 19th century at a time in the history of the United Sites when the relationship between Protestant and Catholic Christians was much less than ideal. Unfortunately, that book reflected various very regrettable negative aspects of that relationship. A predecessor of mine has noted that the anti-Catholic views that this book endorses have been “relegated to the ash heap of history” by current Adventist leaders and lay persons.

“I currently hold the position of president of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and in that capacity I am writing to you to extend the apologies from a leader of one group of Christians to another, asking for your understanding and forgiveness for the unfortunate actions of a small number of members of the Christian faith tradition which I represent.

“At a time when all Christians of good will should be seeking to come together to solve the serious problems facing our world, the actions of a few should not be allowed to confuse and disrupt that cooperation. It is in the spirit of that concern that this letter is being sent to you.

“Please accept this apology in the name of all members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church who wish you and the church you represent the blessings of God.

“Very Respectfully,

Ted N.C. Wilson[1]

While I don’t believe Ted Wilson will sign this letter, or any version of it, as he has repeatedly urged the free distribution of The Great Controversy, I am led to wonder what has inspired this sense of unease with the Third Angel’s message among many denominational theologians.  I soon realize that for far too long it has stopped being preached, and when it is heard today, by the postmodernists and evangelical-trained “scholars,” it comes off as a threatening doctrine, when in truth it embodies a call for true “worship.”  There is nothing offensive in these words, for they constitute “the everlasting gospel” of love, to a lost and dying world:

I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Rev. 14: 6-12

But what if Ted Wilson is coerced by the special interest groups around the world church to sign such a letter or some variant to it, and he complies? This is certainly not out of the realm of possibilities.  After all, the misquoted “predecessor” that Taylor mentioned in his proposed letter to the pope was actually written by Neal Wilson,  Ted’s father.  Here is the full citation:

“Although it is true that there was a period in the life of the Seventh-day Adventist Church when the denomination took a distinctly anti-Roman Catholic viewpoint…that attitude on the church’s part was nothing more than a manifestation of widespread anti-popery among conservative Protestant denominations in the early part of this century and the latter part of the last, and which has now been consigned to the historical trash heap so far as the Seventh-day Adventist Church is concerned.”—Read the full article on this subject, beginning on page-2 of last June’s issue of The King’s Journal.

I hope you get a sense of urgency of where we are in the stream of time and realize that God has always had a people, a goodly remnant, throughout the ages who have been faithful preservers of His truth, and He still has a people today.  They may not be recognized by the corporate leadership of the denomination, as were the Waldenses of their times, but they nevertheless exist in our world church today.  They have been commissioned to their posts of duty by Y’shuah (Jesus), and are inspired by the lives and teachings of the Apostles and early reformers, and are standing under the banner of truth today, leading the way to the Kingdom of YHWH. Please join us in this march to victory!  Here’s how:

Today is September 23, and it is the Day of Atonement (DOA) or Yom Kippur, for the year 2015.  Exactly 171 years ago this date would have been a big deal for the early Adventists, but today, it comes and goes without even a passing notice.  Most of all, this year’s day of atonement is special, in that it is memorialized by the visit of Pope Francis to the United States, on the proverbial doorsteps of the SDA World Church’s Head Quarters, relocated to Silver Spring, Maryland.  Francis will have been the first Jesuit pope, and the first pope ever to address a joint house of the US Congress, and all of this has gone on with Adventist’s silence and turning of their heads the other way, as it were.

We are now so embarrassed by the book for this time—The Great Controversy, that the denomination has made it a project to have it distributed as “the leaves of autumn” (no pun intended, it this is now autumn) to the 1.5 million or more visitors who will be thronging the Washington DC to get a glimpse of the pope.  What have we chosen to do instead?  Well, the strategy is to sing the ten commandments in a Catholic cathedral and invite others to this entertainment.  What a lost opportunity!

Here is a powerful fact, of the more than ten Seventh-day Adventist churches in the immediate vicinity of Washington DC, not to mention the surrounding counties, there have been no evangelism plans, for a simple mass literature distribution.  We’re as it were, on our own.  There has been a stand down attitude to this very rare moment in the history of our church and in the history of the world!  Why has it been so quiet?  I believe I know the answer: I have been writing about this for years now, and in the past few months have been very vocal Online, yet the silence continues.  The truth of the matter is self-evident: we have been so tightly intermeshed with the Vatican today, that it would be a betrayal of our relationship with them for the world church to organize a campaign to place the world on notice that Rev. 13: 3 is to reach its consummate fulfillment in our day.  Let’s see what that pass of Scripture says: “3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.”

The prophecy could never be true had not SDA’s been included in the expression “all the world.”  The frightening reality is this, “8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” Rev. 13: 8.  This means that “all” those who give allegiance to “the beast”—the Papacy—are those “whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world!”  There is more to the SDA’s silence than immediately meets our eyes, and soon the mask will be ripped off the face of this “conservative” church, and behold it will morph into “a Catholic procession.”

So, what is the DOA?  It is the day of judgment, the final day of putting away of sins, and being “at one” with our God and Saviour.  On this day, in the type, the sanctuary was cleansed of all sins it had harbored over the past year and started the sinner out on a new leaf.  It is indicative that there must be an end to sin in our lives, in this world, before we enter the Holy City.  It is an annual reminder that YHWH is determined to having a people in whose heart is no “guile,” and who will stand “without fault” before His holy throne.  In 1844, the DOA fell on October 22nd and oscillates between September and October from year to year.  Not knowing this fact, most SDA’s will commemorate the church’s historic birthday this year one month late.

The fullness of the DOA will be realized when this verse meets it consummate fulfillment: “Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.” Nahum 1: 15.

We are called to commemorate the “solemn feasts” in antitype, in full confidence that “the wicked (unconverted) shall no more” commingle with the righteous—it looks forward to the separation of the wheat from the tares in the Church of God.  This separation is more graphically illustrated in the ninth chapter of Ezekiel.

Regarding the fulfillment of these words, we have been clearly counseled:

“In the ninth chapter of Ezekiel is portrayed the fate of the men of responsibility who have not glorified God by faithfulness and integrity. Read this chapter. Notice especially verses four to six: [quoted]. At the appointed time, the Lord God of Israel will do His work most thoroughly.”[2]

“Study the ninth chapter of Ezekiel. These words will be literally fulfilled; yet the time is passing, and the people are asleep. They refuse to humble their souls and to be converted. Not a great while longer will the Lord bear with the people who have such great and important truths revealed to them, but who refuse to bring these truths into their individual experience. The time is short. God is calling. Will you hear? Will you receive His message? Will you be converted before it is too late? Soon, very soon, every case will be decided for eternity.”[3]

I have found myself wondering about the three lost angels, as of late, for I have not heard the distinctive features of the Third Angel’s Message at a time when it needs to peal forth in clear notes.  But alas!  The Songbird of prophecy has stopped singing!

I want to share with you that denominational apostasy will ultimately end in denominational ruin.  But those who follow the Lamb—the 144,000, will triumph at last when He stands with them on Zion’s summit.  “1Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.” Rev. 14: 1.

  1. I am saddened and surprised that the SDA church has drifted from it’s roots of clear-cut Biblical truth to alignment to the world and popularity. Your founders expoused prophecy and at the heart of those prophecies was the ‘man of sin’ in Daniel and the beast in Revelations which has pointed to the pope and the US. What a farce and change of heart and purpose! Please stick to your guns to cement what your founders stood for in their closing ranks with God and His word.

    1. You’re one brace soul to comment on my site. There have been “thousands of readers” from around the world, but less than 100 comments in over two years. My encouragement to you is to “search for truth as for hidden treasures, and walk in full obedience to that truth, even at the chafing of the SDA leadership. They’ve lost their focus and mission, and are now socializing with the papacy and high-stakes politicians. We have been called to preach “the everlasting gospel,” of the kingdom, and we must do. Our God (YHWH) only needs “a few good men,” even a goodly remnant-144,000 evangelists, to finish his work.

      1. Thanks! I am not a member of the SDA yet, but I have been deeply moved by what God did in your beginnings and especially the writings by Ellen G White. May God help us in His grace to stop straying from our roots and stay true to the foundation that God used for the establishing of our beliefs.

      1. The SDA church is truly the remnant church in prophecy. But like the nation of Israel, God’s professed people, they rejected Jesus Christ, the Messiah, for which the SDA church now is rejecting its prophet, stops proclaiming the 3 angel’s messages, stops exposing the ‘man of sin’. When Sunday Law is implemented, there will be no more SDA conference. Wake up bro Rowel!

    1. Sabbath greetings Victoria! To your question, Yes, you need more than ever to be in the SDA church, to help our people who are fast asleep at the post of duty, rousing them to awake–the hour is late!

Certainly, in all of this, we use the tact and love of our Saviour to teach people the Present Truth for today.

      1. I agree! Stay true to the church especially the foundation laid by William Miller and Ellen G White whom God directed to go back to the Sabbath truth and the 1844 revelation.
Without those revelations and the prophecies that were unraveled through that powerful time, the Christian church at large would be at a huge loss.
Those prophecies and revelation were a clear God directed move to bring the truth into focus (especially the time, times and a half; three and one half years or 42 months) reign of the papacy from which has unmasked the man of sin (first beat from the sea) and the beast from the land which has clarified a lot of what is happening in our current situation.
But do not leave the church and dig deeper into the truth of the Word and His foundation.

    2. Hello Dear Victoria Ferrer, I don’t actually known how I did get here, but as I was scrolling down this blog I saw your post and I felt the need to reply to you. I will encourage you (if you do not want to be deceived) to do a Good digging into the history of the Church of Christ along side with scripture, even from its very beginning. You will encounter the writings of the first Christians (e.g. Ignatius of Antioch, Clemment of Rome etc), some of them were taught by the apostles themselves or were taught by direct disciples of the apostles. They even suffer persecution and martyrdom for the name of the Lord but they manage to conquer in His name. We can learn a lot from them. by their writing we known how the Church was like in the very beginning. You will even realize that they were not Sabbath keepers and many more…
They establish what we today take for granted within Christianity (e.g. the teaching about the Holy Trinity, the divinity of the Lord and the holy Spirit, they put together the Bible in the different councils and they fought against early Christian heresies like Arianism, Docetism, Gnosticism enz.). The first Christians already teach us about the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the importance of Sunday (and by extension every other day) for it was Christ (God) who made everything new, the importance of humility and obedience towards the apostles and their successors (the bishops and priests) who are in charge of maintaining the order within the Church, for God is not a God of chaos and disarray and division but rather a God of order who does not want divisions within His mystical body (the Church).
The Church of Christ has always suffer persecution, blasphemy and many false prophets have arise trying to deceive people and break the unity that Christ wanted for His Church. This in part because many do not understand what the Church actually is… Anyways, reading the teachings of the first Christians (a.k.a the Church fathers) help me a lot. My eyes were suddenly open and it help me a lot overcome the obstacles many had put in way with their false and erratic teachings, everything in scripture started to make more sense than ever! it eventually brought me back home, to the Catholic Church. Not a Church founded by men, but founded by Christ and where His promise reside that the gates of hell will never prevail. So, if by any chance you are looking for the truth, I will recommend you to read the Church fathers, watch The Coming Home Network International (you can watch it on you tube, it has help many) and read a wonderful book called Rome Sweet Home by Scott Hahn or you can watch it on youtube. Many have found the truth for God wants us to be saved and full with his truth and grace.
I wish you a happy new year!

      1. Rowel: Your view of “his church” might be limited to the SDA church, and so I would caution that you not set your hopes on the General Conference, but on “His Church,” the faithful “remnant”–the 144,000. And in this respect, yes, He will not allow anything to ruin “his church,” because even the “dragon’s wrath”–“the gates of hell”–cannot prevail against them.

The Sda church is not what she one was. Most sda’s know that but they hang onto false hope and many lose their faith and go out leaving their trust in God behind thecm. That is why it’s so dangerous not to seperate from unbelievers. The unbelievers of the church that holds onto prime catholic beliefs. The Prime
Catholic belief is the trinity. , and low and behold , what is the Sda church , even the Sdarm church doing with this false belief. It was introduced about the 1980 in the Sda church but later in the Sdarm church. In the end ,no church can give you any comfort ,so hang onto your trust in our Saviour only. Do and follow his example. He will strengthen you. You know all this as he taught it. Behold him , not any organisation as they will all let you down if you do. It’s all about who you are be holing in the forefront. There are many that you could help in the churches , do the work if God leads you to do so but be careful the influence of the majority does not Endanger you.

  2. Brothers and sisters do not assign this “letter” to Ted Wilson or assume it to be any sort of official position of the SDA church or its members. This is the fanciful idea of the post author and nothing more. His choice to affix Brother Wilson’s name has given it a supposed authenticity. What the author has succeeded in doing is to damage the name of the SDA church as other sites re-post this as fact.

    1. Hi (Brother/Sister) Chris:

Please note that your claim of “damage” to “the name of the SDA church,” is an overstatement, for they’ve already done that. Can you please tell this audience why Ted Wilson has gone on record to state that the perspective of the Third Angels message promulgated by the pioneers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been “consigned to the trash heaps of history”? Neal (Ted’s father) later became GC president, even after admitting that the SDA church is another “catholic” church.

I would advise that you stop keeping your head in the sand, and deal with the facts in front of you. Have you heard the Third Angel’s message, component of the Beast and his mark taught in your conference-appointed church, lately? Why did the entire Potomac Conference agree to not send even one member to do mass literature distribution of the Great Controversy–the book for this time? Why was the organist for the General Conference playing at the pope’s mass? Do these things redeem the name of the SDA church, for do they “soil” it?

You can pretend ignorance like the people in Noah’s days, but that does not change the reality that a storm is coming! Are you ready for the “shaking”? It is here, it is happening NOW!

I plead with you and all readers to please study Ezekiel 9 and Micah 6, and be wise unto salvation to “hear ye the ROD, and Him [Jesus Christ], who appointed it.”

Jesus said destroy the temple and in three days i will build it. Those in the flesh were thinking of buildings, but he said this concerning his body, which will not rot in Hades.

if you are willing, Jesus is the head of the Church and believers are the body of Christ. The body of Christ is not the SDA church neither is it any other denomination. All those who claim to be the true Church meaning a denomination fool themselves, in the SDA church there are also people who will find a place in the lake of fire because they think that Going to the SDA church is all that is needed.

The 1 Cor 12:13 for by one spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether jew or gentile … and have been all made to drink from one Spirit

Unless a man is born again of water and the Spirit you can not inherit the Kingdom of God. John baptized with water and that was the baptism for those who repainted and John told then to believe in him who was to come after him mainly Jesus.

      Rom 10:5-13

5 For Moshe writes about the righteousness grounded in the Torah that the person who does these things will attain life through them. 6 Moreover, the righteousness grounded in trusting says:

“Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend to heaven?’” —

that is, to bring the Messiah down — 7 or,

“‘Who will descend into Sh’ol?’” —

that is, to bring the Messiah up from the dead. 8 What, then, does it say?

“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.” —

that is, the word about trust which we proclaim, namely, 9 that if you acknowledge publicly with your mouth that Yeshua is Lord and trust in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be delivered. 10 For with the heart one goes on trusting and thus continues toward righteousness, while with the mouth one keeps on making public acknowledgement and thus continues toward deliverance. 11 For the passage quoted says that everyone who rests his trust on him will not be humiliated. 12 That means that there is no difference between Jew and Gentile — Adonai is the same for everyone, rich toward everyone who calls on him, 13 since everyone who calls on the name of Adonai will be delivered. True, she made those statements, but you need to understand that she was not directing them to the General Conference. So yes, the remnant will survive, but the GC will apostatize, by and large, and it is evident to all now. I still attend the churches, but have been asked not to come back to some, because of the impact of this Website. What a great testimony on behalf of “religious liberty.”

      1. What. Most SDA’s don’t know or teach is that EGW spoke of two ships. One that that carried the truth and one that was full of worms.. She also mentioned that if you want to know what will happen in the latter rain , look at what happened in the former rain. The former rain is when Jesus was here. The majority always rule throughout history and the few faithfull are forced to seperate. The Jews still think they are Gods people , so do the Catholics , so do the parodists ts, and Lol so do the Sds’s. All are deceived and blinded by believing their ship will go through. If you are truely faithful to the teachings and words of Jesus , you too will be outed by your so called ship that will go through as a heretic as was Jezus. I. Challenge you all to get a bible which has red.lettering in it which is what Jesus spoke. Read it 20 timrse. You will be shocked how out of place Jesus was in comparison with the rest of scripture. He is our perfect example. Focus on him and you will find saftey only in him. No ship will save you. No friends will help because you will be abandoned. By most. That will do for now.

Sadly our beloved church has moved away from the central pillar Who we worship, and instead of a loving Father God and His beloved real only begotten Son, they are worshipping a Pagan God called the trinity. Israel turned to false gods over and over and we have done the same to be like the other churches. I love the Advent people, so we need to tell them this also. REMOVING THE PILLAR gives the history of the change from before 1888 until the vote in 1980. THE VERY LONG STORY is for teens and adults that shows the real reason why Lucifer was cast out of heaven. It’s the same story. Satan hates God’s Son. THE LIGHT OF GOD gives the truth about the Spirit and where the real throne of the Spirit is. ALL BOOKS FREE.

When pope John paul came to Australia a faithful group from new Zealand flew to Australia and handed out personally the Great Controversy to the thousands that thronged the pope. One faithful brother even managed to give it to of his close guards who accepted it. Armed with a deep love for their fellow man they grabbed the golden opportunity and went for it. They paid for their own expenses and all in all said they had a remarkable day. Also, we in QLD, Australia post the GC to vast regions of QLD. Their aim was to get it into every letter box in QLD. What a shame those surrounding churches thought only about hurting their image and a no thought for those who are still in darkness. May God help us! Actually, is it correct that Neal Wilson burned many hundreds of GC books? May God bless you and you ministry

    1. Sabbath greetings Millie:

Truly a shame to see where we are today, but we expected this all along, and it only serves to show show far we are on our journey, or how close we are to the consummation of all things.

“To blame past violations of Christian principles on one specific denomination is not an accurate representation of either history or the concerns of Bible prophecy. We recognize that at times Protestants, including Seventh-day Adventists, have manifested prejudice and even bigotry. If, in expounding on what the Bible teaches, Seventh-day Adventists fail to express love to those addressed, we do not exhibit authentic Christianity. Adventists seek to be fair in dealing with others. Thus, while we remain aware of the historical record and continue to hold our views regarding end-time events, we recognize some positive changes in recent Catholicism, and stress the conviction that many Roman Catholics are brothers and sisters in Christ.” –Statements, Guidelines & Other Documents – 95, June 2010 by the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist, Church Communication Department Printed by Review and Herald Publishing Association. “This statement was recorded on April 15, 1997, by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Administrative Committee (ADCOM) and released by the Office of the president, Robert S. Folkenberg.”

The above statement, while it clarifies the historic position of the church in seeing only the Catholics as our prophetic enemies, has taken a closer and more conciliatory tone towards the alliances now being formed with the papacy. It is not far distant when we will fully come out of the closet, as we have been told of a “catholic procession” emerging from the SDA church when the time of test comes. Today we are only seeing the beginning of such a movement. May those who come behind us, if there is another generation, find us faithful.

  6. Someone requested my references for the 2 ships that Ellen White spoke of so I am pasting the complete article here, with my comments added and noted at the end of it. Sorry for the length. Two Ships
    by Lesley Johnson
    Ref Herald Apr-Jun 1996

There seems to be some confusion in Adventist circles as to which is the “ship” to be “carried safely into port” and which is the one “drifting away to sea, without chart or compass.” The following has been compiled with much prayer.

In referring to ships, the Spirit of Prophecy emphasises:

4T 322 “A ship may be sound in nearly every respect; but if there is one defect‑a bit of timber worm‑eaten, the lives of all on board are imperilled.”

This is a life‑and‑death matter. It is only at the peril of our lives that we can embark or remain on a defective ship in the midst of a storm‑tossed sea.

5T 571-572 “Dear Brother M: I had an impressive dream last night. I thought that you were on a strong vessel, sailing on very rough waters. Sometimes the waves beat over the top, and you were drenched with water. You said ‘I shall get off; this vessel is going down.’ ‘No,’ said one who appeared to be the captain, ‘this vessel sails into the harbour. She will never go down.’ But you answered: ‘I shall be washed overboard. As I am neither captain nor mate, who cares? I shall take my chances on that vessel you see yonder.’ Said the captain, ‘I shall not let you go there, for I know that vessel will strike rocks before she reaches the harbour.’ You straightened yourself up, and said with great positiveness: ‘This vessel will become a wreck; I can see it just as plain as can be.’ The captain looked upon you with piercing eyes and said firmly ‘I shall not permit you to lose your life by taking that boat. The timbers of her framework are worm‑eaten, and she is a deceptive craft. If you had more knowledge you could discern between the spurious and the genuine, the holy and that appointed to utter ruin.”

Can you see that the “frame work” here referred to must be the platform, the foundation of our beliefs? One ship was a “strong vessel” and the other’s framework was “worm‑eaten,” and “deceptive.” The man did not have enough knowledge to discern aright. Please remember that people can change ships by: 1) neglect and indifference causing disrepair, 2) planned destruction, or 3) by physically switching over from one to another.

2SM 201 “As a people, we are to stand firm on the platform of eternal truth that has withstood test and trial. We are to hold to the sure pillars of our faith. The principles of truth that God has revealed to us are our only true foundation. They have made us what we are. The lapse of time has not lessened their value.”

Back to the ships ‑ the testimonies explain:

RH Dec 16, 1890 “To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.’ ‘Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.’ The solemn question should come home to every member of our churches, How are we standing before God, as the professed followers of Jesus Christ? Is our light shining forth to the world in clear, steady rays? Have we, as a people solemnly dedicated to God, preserved our union with the Source of all light? Are not the symptoms of decay and declension painfully visible in the midst of the Christian churches of today? Spiritual death has come upon the people that should be manifesting life and zeal, purity and consecration, by the most earnest devotion to the cause of truth. The facts concerning the real condition of the professed people of God, speak more loudly than their profession, and make it evident that some power has cut the cable that anchored them to the Eternal Rock, and that they are drifting away to sea, without chart or compass.”

This warning was repeated again six years later almost verbatim (RH Aug 28, 1894). Was the majority on the right ship? Who had cut the cable? The “facts” concerning their condition spoke “more loudly than their profession.” If only they had clung to sound doctrine, which has never set anyone adrift! Let us solemnly consider another statement:

2SM 128 “I lately read of a noble ship that was plowing its way across the sea, when at midnight, with a terrific crash, it struck upon a rock; the passengers were awakened only to see with horror their helpless condition, and with the ship they sank to rise no more. The man at the helm had mistaken the beacon light, and hundreds of souls were at a moment’s warning launched into eternity. If we present a phase of character that misrepresents Christ, we present a false light, and souls will surely be misled by our example,”

If the man at the helm of that ship had been Jesus, no mistake would have been made.

    Another statement:

1SM 205-206 “Shortly before I sent out the testimonies regarding the efforts of the enemy to undermine the foundation of our faith through the dissemination of seductive theories, I had read an incident about a ship in a fog meeting an iceberg. For several nights I slept but little. I seemed to be bowed down as a cart beneath sheaves. One night a scene was clearly presented before me. A vessel was upon the waters, in a heavy fog. Suddenly the lookout cried, ‘Iceberg just ahead!’ There, towering high above the ship, was a gigantic iceberg. An authoritative voice cried out, ‘Meet it!’ There was not a moment’s hesitation. It was a time for instant action. The engineer put on full steam, and the man at the wheel steered the ship straight into the iceberg. With a crash she struck the ice. There was a fearful shock, and the iceberg broke into many pieces, falling with a noise like thunder to the deck. The passengers were violently shaken by the force of the collision, but no lives were lost. The vessel was injured. but not beyond repairs. She rebounded from the contact, trembling from stern to stern, like a living creature. Then she moved forward on her way.
“Well, I knew the meaning of this representation. I had my orders. I had heard the words, like a voice from our Captain, ‘Meet it!’ I knew what my duty was and that there was not a moment to lose. The time for decided action had come. I must without delay obey the command, ‘Meet it!’
“That night I was up at one o’clock, writing as fast as my hand could pass over the paper. For the next few days I worked early and late, preparing for our people the instruction given me regarding the errors that were coming in among us.
“I have been hoping that there would be a thorough reformation, and that the principles for which we fought in the early days, and which were brought out in the power of the Holy Spirit would be maintained.”

1SM 208 “We are God’s commandment keeping people. For the past fifty years every phase of heresy has been brought to bear upon us, to becloud our minds regarding the teaching of the Word‑especially concerning the ministration of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, and the message of Heaven for these last days as given by the angel of the fourteenth chapter of Revelation. Messages of every order and kind have been urged upon Seventh‑day Adventists, to take the place of the truth which, point by point, has been sought out by prayerful study, and testified to by the miracle‑working power of our Lord. But the waymarks which have made us what we are, are to be preserved, and they will be preserved, as God has signified through His Word and the testimony of His Spirit. He calls upon us to hold firmly, with the grip of faith, to the fundamental principles that are based upon unquestionable authority.”

It is not a “ship” that makes the “fundamental principles,” but the “fundamental principles” that make the “ship”! And in Adventism, there are two ships described by the Spirit of Prophecy‑one that has upheld the fundamental principles and one that has abandoned many of them. In the last few years, many precious souls on the large vessel have begun to recognise that mutiny has overtaken the ship, changed its course and betrayed the Captain. As more and more leaks appear, these sincere souls are realising their”boat” is no longer safe. In alarm, many have been jumping overboard onto little independent rafts. These makeshift lifeboats have helped to keep many afloat a little while longer, but they are not designed to withstand the high seas and tempests that are forecasted. By God’s grace, some of the souls on these lifeboats will meet the ship that the Lord is leading in the right direction and will recognise the wisdom in stepping aboard. Sadly, though, others will be so attached to their rafts that when they meet the rescue team, they expect them to abandon their solid, established vessel and hop onto a raft, too. Many of those rafts may likely end up travelling in so close tandem with the very ship from which they jumped, as to perish together with it.

Brethren, only the great Lifepreserver has power to save any one of us. And when His mediation ceases, it will ultimately be a case of each individual’s having been prepared to “sink or swim.” Yet until that momentous hour, while probation lingers and the waters swell, the Captain in His wisdom has firmly bidden us “stay on the ship”‑ but just make sure it’s the right ship!

2SM 390-391 “There is no need to doubt, to be fearful that the work will not succeed. God is at the head of the work, and He will set everything in order. If matters need adjusting at the head of the work, God will attend to that, and work to right every wrong. Let us have faith that God is going to carry the noble ship which bears the people of God safely into port….
“When you think that the work is in danger, pray, ‘Lord, stand at the wheel. Carry us through the perplexity. Bring us safely into port.’ Have we not reason to believe that the Lord will bring us through triumphantly?”

But we must be on the ship with strong timbers‑sound doctrine. It has been prophesied that the multitude of deceptions prevailing in the last days would ensnare professed Adventists (RH Dec 16, 1890).

AA 199 “May God give every man a realisation of his helplessness, his inability to steer his own vessel straight and safe into the harbour.”

5T 83 “We cannot be half the Lord’s and half the world’s. We are not God’s people unless we are such entirely.”

May God strengthen our grip on the true foundation and keep us afloat in the storm‑tossed billows still to come!

3T 446 A church cannot measure herself by what she once was.

    ‑TI‑ The Upward Look ‑PG‑ 152

. The foundation of our faith, which was established by so much prayer, such earnest searching of the Scriptures, was being taken down, pillar by pillar. Our faith was to have nothing to rest upon‑‑the sanctuary was gone, the atonement was gone. . . . Do you wonder that I have something to say, when I see the pillars of our faith beginning to be moved? Seductive theories are being taught in such a way that we shall not recognize them unless we have clear spiritual
discernment.‑‑Manuscript 46, May 18, 1904, “The Foundation of Our Faith,” a talk given at Berrien Springs, Michigan.

    ‑TI‑ The Upward Look ‑PG‑ 131

The Lord Jesus will always have a chosen people to serve Him. When the Jewish people rejected Christ, the Prince of life, He took from them the kingdom of God and gave it unto the Gentiles. God will continue to work on this principle with every branch of His work. When a church proves unfaithful to the work of the Lord, whatever their position may be, however high and sacred their calling, the Lord can no longer work with them. Others are then chosen to bear important responsibilities. But, if these in turn do not purify their lives from every wrong action, if they do not establish pure and holy principles in all their borders, then the Lord will grievously afflict and humble them and, unless they repent, will remove them from their place and make them a reproach. . . . ‑‑Manuscript 33, April 27, 1903, “God’s Purpose for His Church.”

  7. Thanks to everyone for their comments, I was raised a SDA, left the church for many years, Re-reading The Great Controversy reawakened my faith in the Church, I believe that Paul, in Acts 27:31 said, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved, he was speaking to us today, STAY with the ship! Jesus is in the ship with us, He will not let the storm sink the ship! I feel it is a sad day when we turn blind to the true plans of the papacy. When we forget what the true nature of the catholic church is, we are doomed to apostasy. Do not be deceived, Study, study, study.

    1. Hi Mike: I appreciate your passion to accept the command of staying in the ship, however that is not the end of the story. For the interest of all, let me now provide the rest of the facts surrounding that incident with the ship:

“21But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss. 22And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship…41And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves. 42And the soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape. 43But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land: 44And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.” Acts 27: 21, 22, 41-44

So Paul has predicted that eventual demise of the ship (verse 21), yet only those who eventually abandoned the ship and swam for dear life (holding on to the worthy scraps–broken pieces) were eventually saved! Is there a lesson here! I say a thousand times YES. The lesson is that the “big ship” of Zion will enter terrible waters of apostasy, and only those who can swim for themselves (Read Heb. 5: 11-14 and Jer. 17: 5), those who eat strong meat and not drinking milk, while refusing to depend on the arm of flesh shall eventually be saved. Blessed are they with eyes and ears to both see and hear the things that are happening in our beloved SDA church. To sit back and enjoy the rid of apostasy towards spiritual Egypt and Babylon cannot be done without eternal injury to our souls. Again, note that the ship was finally destroyed, and they had of necessity to “abandon ship!”

    1. If Laodicea does not “repent” then she will verily be spewed out of Christ’s mouth–be rejected only to wail and gnash here teeth. Let us labor for her salvation by “sighing and crying against all the abominations that be done therein” (Ezek. 9: 4-7), while we simultaneously avail ourselves to receive the seal of Yahweh’s approval.

    1. There are those who are beholden to the institution which emerged from the 1844 pioneers not realizing that the “ship” h as been hijacked by a group of reactionaries who are merely holding to the “name” of the denomination, while daily repudiating everything the historic movement build up. Be careful not to fall in the deadly trap of ancient Judah:

“3 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. 4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these. 5 For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour; 6 If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: 7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.

8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit. 9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; 10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations? 11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.

12 But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel. 13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not; 14 Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh. 15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.” Jer. 7: 3-16

May the Holy Spirit grant you wisdom to apply the truth of Jeremiah’s prophecy to our lives today. Shalom in Messiah.
